(1) Contribution to the Silk Roads' OUV

Kizilgaha Beacon Tower, as one of the military communication security facilities on Tian-shan Mountains Southern Route west of Yumen Pass from 2nd Century BC to 3rd Century AD, is located on the north edge of Tarim Basin and the terrace at the southern foot of Queletage Hill. As the best preserved and largest existing ancient beacon tower on the Silk Roads, it witnessed the importance of beacon towers for the large scale transportation system of Han Dynasty to secure long distance transportation and exchanges.

(2) General Informaition

The Kizilgaha Beacon Tower is located 12km northwest of Kuqa county downtown, Aksu Prefecture of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, on the Gobi terrace east of Yanshuigou Ravine. Many beacon towers have been discovered in Kuqa county, and the majority of the beacon tower remains were found in the south of Queletage Hill, roughly forming an eastwest band. Kizilgaha Beacon Tower, one of them, is the best preserved, the largest and the most representative ancient beacon tower in Xinjiang.

The Gobi terrace east of Yanshuigou Ravine offered the beacon tower an open view. It was situated on a vital route connecting Yumen Pass with ancient Kucha, Shule and finally Uisin to the west in north of Tian-shan. The Kizilgaha Beacon Tower is about 13 meters high. The bottom of the beacon tower is 6.5 meters long from east to west and 4.5 meters wide from north to south. The bottom is rectangular-shaped, and the upper part gradually contracted to become a table-like quadrangular. The beacon tower was built with rammed earth of thickness ranging from 10 to 20 cm. Along the transport route in the mountain range at the south side of Yanshuigou Ravine, there preserves 4 forts of Han and Tang dynasty, of which, the best-preserved one is a 7m-tall tapering structure with 77 square meters in base and 27.5 square meters at top. The structure was built with adobe in the center and masonry cladding in the other parts.

(3) Attributes

The Han Dynasty defense system west of the Yumen Pass stretched in the form of a series of beacon towers. The Kizilgaha Beacon Tower indicate the direction of the Southern Route of Tianshan Mountains.The Kizilgaha Beacon Tower, as the best preserved and largest beacon tower along the Silk Roads, bears special witness to the beacon tower system in Han Dynasty’s transport system. The Kizilgaha Beacon Tower is located in the south of Queletage Hill and in the Gobi terrace east of Yanshuigou Ravine. There is an elevation of about 16 meters from the trench to the platform, rendering the beacon tower a wide view. Taking advantage of natural Gobi environment when building beacon towers for military alarm, ancient people exhibited their wisdom in natural environment utilization when they tried to secure and administrate long-distance transport.
