China National Silk Museum Successfully Replicated the “Five-star Brocade” with a Restored Han Dynasty Loom

With the restored Western Han Dynasty jacquard machine unearthed from the Laoguanshan Han Dynasty Tomb in Chengdu, China National Silk Museum successfully replicated the “Five-star appeared in the East benefit China” brocade of the Han Dynasty, a national first grade cultural relics unearthed at Niya, Xinjiang. It is the first restoration of the original device, technology and process in this field.

In 2014, the “National Compass Project” were implemented under the leadership of China National Silk Museum, cooperated with Chengdu Museum and the Institute of Natural Scierce History under Chinese Academy of Sciences. They restored the multi- heddled jacquard machine and rediscovered contexture- weaving technology of the Western Han Dynasty. In 2015, based on the existing research and preliminary results, authorized by SACH, Xinjiang Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology and the Xinj- iang Administration of Cultural Heritage entrusted China National Silk Museum to duplicate the “Five-star Brocade” with restored multi-heddled jacquard machine which were unearthed at La-oguanshan Han Dynasty Tomb. In February 2017, Luo Qun led his

team and replicated the “Five-star brocade” successfully.
