The Administration of Two World Heritage Sites: Maijishan Grottoes and Binglingsi Grottoes is Transferred to Dunhuang Research Academy
In
order to well preserve and research on cultural heritages of grottoes along the
Silk Road, Gansu officials broke the original management system and transferred
the management of the north grotto and two world heritage sites: Maijishan
grottoes and Binglingsi grottoes to Dunhuang Research Academy, an institute
protecting and administrating Mogao caves.
As the
“Hometown of Grottoes” along the Silk Road, Gansu province is home to 205
grottoes with different sizes, among which Maogao caves and Maijishan grottoes
are in the list of the four major grottoes in China. At present, Maogao caves,
Maijishan and Binglingsi grottoes are world cultural heritage sites. The North
Grotto is in the World Heritage Tentative List.
As for
administration, the four sites are respectively in charge of Dunhuang Academy,
Maijishan grottoes institute, Institute of Binglinsi Grottoes Preservation and
Institute of North Grotto Temple Preservation. They are directly affiliated
with Gansu Cultural Department and Gansu Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics.
According
to Gansu Provincial Bureau of Cultural Relics, Dunhuang Academy is in leading
position around China and the world in protections of fresco and earthen
relics, research and application of digital technology, study of tourist
capacity, openness and utilization, and international exchanges and
cooperation. However, the administration of Maijishan grottoes, Binglinsi
grottoes and north grottoes is weak with insufficient professionals. Its
capacity of relic protection and research is weak. There is still a huge gap between
the requirements of world cultural heritage sites and the work of relic
protection, administration, research and utilization.
Organization Committee of Gansu Province has approved to adjust the administration relation of these three sites: Maijishan Grottoes, Binglingsi Grottoes and North Grottoes and incorporate their protection and research institutes into Dunhuang Academy, reported by a journalist on 22nd.
This kind of administration is beneficial to break the bottleneck of insufficient talents and technology of grottoes cultural heritage, to raise the overall strength of protection, administration, research and utilization of grottoes and to build a strong system of preservation, research and management of Gansu grottoes.
