September 16th 2019, the first systematic archaeological excavation of the ancient Suoyang city, a World Heritage Site, is officially launched. The ancient Suoyang city is located in Guazhou County of Jiuquan City, Gansu Province. As a well-preserved ancient city on the ancient Silk Road, it became a part of the W orld Heritage "Silk Road: Routs Network of Changan-Tianshan Corridor" in 2014. Mr. Wang Jianjun, an associate researcher from Dunhuang Academy, China who is in char ge of the archaeological excavation project, said that the purpose of project is to find out the basic situation of the Suoyang city through investigation, exploration, mapping and other means, as well as to carry out archaeology excavations in some areas of the site, so as to provide relative support for the construction of Suoyang archaeological park. The Suoyang Heritage Site is one of the key project for preserve of “Great Sites” and national archaeological parks in Gansu Province. In March, base on the Suoyang city archaeological excavation plan (2019-2023) the NCHA approved the Ta’ er Temple (outer wall, main gate) project. The site was jointly discovered by Dunhuang Academy China and Han-tang Archaeological Research Unit of the Institute of Archaeology of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The first phase of the plan needs 5 years. This time the excavation area covered 200 square meters, and will last from August to December 2019. |
