Bingling Cave-Temple Complex was first carved in West Qin Dynasty and Sixteen Kingdoms (385-431 AD). As the ruling class of West Qin worshiped Buddhism,masters from all over the world were to expound and translate Buddhism texts in special sites built in its capital, Fuhan City (nowadays Linxia in Gansu). Fuhan was atraffic center along the south route of the Silk Roads,and Bingling Cave-Temple Complex situated in Fuhangradually became a Buddhism sanctum. In 1952, the first survey of Binglin Cave-Temple Complex was conducted and the caves were firstly numbered. In 1955, Cultural Relics Repository of Bingling Cave-Temple Complex in Yongjing was founded. In 1961, the State Council declared it as first batch of State Priority Protected Cultural Heritage Site. |
