Two-thousand-year-old burial complex found in N China

A total of 113 tombsestimated to be more than 2,000 years oldhave beendiscovered in the northern province of Hebeiaccording to archaeologists.

The tombsall of the urn burial typeare part of the Fudi city ruins in Huanghua,Hebei.

The remains of 107 children were found in the tombssaid Zhang Baogangcurator ofHuanghua city museum.

"During the past 2,000 yearschanges to the river course and other environmentalfactors have damaged the tombs," he said. "The graveyard for the adults would havelikely been much larger."

Utensils made from pottery were also found and dated around the Warring States (475BC-221 BCperiod.

The city of Huanghua was known as a military forthowever Zhang said that "thenumber of tombs specifically for adolescents challenges this conclusion."

Bai Yunxiangvice head of the Institute of Archaeology under the Chinese Academyof Social Sciencessaid the discovery will inform research into burial customs andcity planning.
