More than 90 ancient cliff tombs, dating back to as early as the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220), have recently been found in southwest China's Sichuan Province, authorities said Monday.

The salvage excavation was carried out from July 2017 to March 2018 in Jintang County of Chengdu City, since a real estate construction project was about to start near the site, according to the archaeological research institute of the city.

Over 400 burial items were unearthed, including various pottery, porcelain, copper, silver and ironware. Among the pottery, there were pots, axes, and figures of animals and people.

More than 30 tombs date back to the period of Chenghan, a 43-year regime existing in the Jin Dynasty (265-420).

Experts believe that the discovery will contribute greatly to the study of the politics, scientific development and religious belief of the Chenghan, which lacks sufficient historical records.
