From June to August this year, the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology has successively built archaeological teams jointly with the Institute of History and Cultural Heritage of the Kyrgyz National Academy of Sciences and the Issyk-Kul State Historical and Cultural Museum in Kazakhstan. They have been carrying out archaeological excavations and researches at a Buddhist temple site on the Western Krasnaya Rechka (“Red River”) in Kyrgyzstan and the Rahat Site in the Issyk-Kul State Historical Cultural Reserve in Kazakhstan.

The ancient city Krasnaya Rechka (“Red River”) is located in Kant, Chuy Province, Kyrgyzstan. In the exploration and excavation of the Buddhist temple site on the west side of Krasnaya Rechka, the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology has comprehensively used a variety of means to have records of Krasnaya Rechka in all aspects, and arranged conservation experts to guide the extraction and protection of cultural relics and the cleaning and repairing of small bronze wares. This archaeological work has achieved important outcomes. During the excavation, the team initially clarified the scope of the wall of the west side of the Buddhist temple, and accurately surveyed the site of the ancient city for the first time, accumulating relevant experience of excavating adobe bricks sites in Central Asia. Through excavation, a building base has been confirmed, though the specific usage of which is still unknown, and thus further archaeological work is required.

The Rahat Site in the reserve of Issyk-kul is located on a platform in the northern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains in Kazakhstan, which is an important site on the northern Tianshan routes of the Silk Road. This archaeological activity combines drilling and general records with RTK mapping, 3D photography, high-altitude aerial survey and other modern technologies, with a total of 240 square meters of trial trenches excavated. The archaeological excavation has also found some material remains of local people’s life, which can offer more scientific archaeological data for a comprehensive study of the Rahat Site.
