Over One Hundred of Artifacts from the State Hermitage Museum of Russia Exhibited on “Life along the Silk Roads: Stories of the Great Era in China

Upon the fifth anniversary of the successful nomination of Silk Roads on the
World Heritage list, June 22, the special exhibition entitled “Life along the Silk
Road: Stories of the Great Era” was opened in the China Silk Museum at the
footage of the Yuhuang Mount, Hangzhou. The exhibition reconstructs the
daily life of the var ious communities lived along the S ilk Road through the
accounts of thirteen stories that centered on thirteen historic figures of different
eras, ethnic groups, social identities, and life experiences. It shows over
five hundreds of artifacts borrowed from museums and institutions worldwide.
Among the five hundreds exhibited objects(sets), one hundred and seven are
contributed by the State Hermitage Museum of Russia, which is a lso called
“Winter Palace.” Those excavated artifacts from the burial of the Pazyryk
culture and the Noin-Ula, usually hoarded and preserved deep in the
museum, are rarely shown in such a large scale. The rest of the exhibition
includes artifacts discovered in major burial sites and even under-water
archaeological missions, such as the site of Xuanquan, Zhang Jun Burial from
Leitai, Li Xian Burial, Shijun Burial, and the Nanhai No. 1 ship wreck.
