The location of the "Shule city" site dated to Han dynasty is
controversy in the academic circle. On Aug. 27th, experts engaged in
the study of archaeology and history of Qin and Han dynasties, and culture of
Xinjiang Province from the Peking University, China Archaeological Institute of
the Academy of Social Sciences, Shaanxi Provincial Institute of archaeology, Cultural
Relics Bureau of the Autonomous Region, Autonomous Region Museum and other 8
units initially identified the Shichengzi ancient city is the "Shule
city" in Han Dynasty after discussion.
The ruins of the Shichengzi ancient city are
located northeast to Magouliang village, Banjiegou town, Qitai County, built according
to the natural terrain. In the city, the north part is higher than the south
part, and the horizon is undulating. Since 2014, the Archaeology Research
Institute of Xinjiang Province has carried out archaeological excavations on
the Shihezi ancient city site for the first time in the history once achieving
permission from the State Administration of Cultural Heritage. Excavation area
covers about 300 square meters; in 2015, a survey of the city was done and
pottery kilns and tombs were found in the west part of the city; The excavation
continues to 2016, total excavation area reaches to 640 square meters. Associate
professor Tian Xiaohong, Archaeological Department for Han and Tang Period, said:
" according to the remains found in the ancient city, we concluded that it
is dated to Han dynasty. Among the unearthed relics, large amount of eaves tiles
with cloth and cloud pattern which are very typical for those type of art in
Han dynasty was found. This discovery is dazzling for archaeology in Xinjiang
Province.
Researcher Bai Yunxiang, Institute of
Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said: "these tiles may be
made by craftsmen from the mainland and finished in local. This region not only
has the authority of the government, but also attracting craftsmen came over here
in Han dynasty. This information is very important to us to understand the
management and rule system of Han Empire to the northern region.”
