This handsome volume -- the catalogue of an exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts, London -- celebrates the 1996 discovery of a hoard of Buddhist stone statues at the Longxing temple site in Qingzhou, Shandong Province, China. As archaeological treasures, these statues -- which caused much excitement at their first showing in Beijing in 1999 -- stand as magnificent cultural relics of immense significance for the study of Chinese Buddhist history, archaeology, and art.The 35 superbly carved works shown here were selected from the more than 400 statues unearthed, the majority sculpted in limestone. Their unique characteristics reveal the outstanding achievements in the development of stone carving in China during the period of the Northern and Southern Dynasties.

In 1996, workmen in Qingzhou, China, accidentally discovered some buried statues of the Buddha and various bodhisattvas elaborately carved from stone. With the help of a nearby museum, over 400 statues were recovered from the area, which had been the site of the Long-xing temple. The statues dated from the sixth to the 11th centuries, and many were in amazingly good condition. Thirty-five of the best of these works were sent to the Royal Academy of Arts in Great Britain for display, and this exquisite book is the exhibition catalog. Each of the 35 statues has its own magnificent full-page, full-color plate, revealing some of the original gilding and coloring. On the opposite page is a brief but detailed description of the piece, clarifying its place in Buddhist art and thought. In addition to the visual feast, this book offers brief but important contextual essays. A map of China and list of the dynasties and periods of imperial China are also helpful.
