(English version below)

Launch of webinar series “New Horizons of Heritage Conservation”

Session 1: Communicating Heritage Value through New Media

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, and as the world approaches the mid-point of implementing the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, UNESCO is taking leadership as the only UN agency with a mandate in culture to join forces in search for new horizons in heritage conservation, in order to demonstrate the transformative role of culture in promoting sustainable development.

On 20 May 2022, UNESCO Beijing Office will launch the “New Horizons in Heritage Conservation” webinar series within the framework of “Conservation and Management of World Heritage Sites in China” Project Phase IV (2021-2024), with an aim to raise awareness among the civil society on the important role of heritage conservation and cultural safeguarding in progressing sustainable development. The first webinar focuses on the theme of “Communicating Heritage Value through New Media”, and is jointly facilitated with Communication University of China.

The UNESCO - China Youth Development Foundation Mercedes-Benz Star Fund Funds-in-Trust project “Conservation and Management of World Heritage Sites in China” began in 2007 and has entered the fourth phase of implementation in 2021. The Project Phase IV aligns with the three priority areas in the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) in China 2021-2025, i.e. “People and Prosperity” “Planet” and “Partnership”, and aims to support China’s efforts in heritage conservation and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.

Subsequent webinars in the series are planned to be jointly facilitated with research institutes and international organizations including Chinese Academy of Cultural Heritage, ICOMOC China, Sun Yat-sen University and International Bamboo and Rattan Organization, with guidance from UNESCO Headquarters and World Heritage Centre. The webinars will facilitate dialogue and exchange on issues of heritage conservation, sustainable tourism, climate change etc., and will contribute to finding more systematic and advanced solutions to the conservation and sustainable development of World Heritage sites.

Webinar #1 - Communicating Heritage Value through New Media

“Increase public awareness, involvement and support for World Heritage through Communication” is one of the five strategic objectives -- also known as the “five C’s” -- in response to the increasing demands for a sustainable, comprehensive and inclusive implementation of the World Heritage Convention. The strong development momentum for World Heritage sites comes not only from partner agencies, professional networks and the support from government administrations, but also from the keen awareness and active engagement from the civil society. The rapid growth of internet technology and new media brought significant changes to the way people work and live, and provided new channels and opportunities for the development of World Heritage sites and for people to learn and share knowledge about culture and heritage. As information about heritage circulate in new media, their values are rediscovered and re-interpreted.

The first webinar “Communicating Heritage Value through New Media” on 20 May 2022 will focus on the understanding and outreach of heritage values in the contemporary society from the perspectives of community-building, technological empowerment, public participation, etc. UNESCO welcomes all interested individuals to register and participate in the online webinar.
