Express News
Post-earthquake Express News on Myanmar's Historical and Cultural Heritage
Foreword
The 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck on March 28, 2025 caused heavy losses to Myanmar. According to latest reports from CCTV NEWS and the Xinhua News Agency, as of April 7th, the strong earthquake that struck Myanmar on the 28th has resulted in 3600 deaths, with another 5017 injured and approximately 160 missing. We extend our deepest condolences to all the victims.
The earthquake also dealt a devastating blow to numerous cultural heritage sites along Mandalay - Sagaing - Naypyitaw region, with about 150 temples and pagodas damaged. Important structures such as the King Palace, Mahamuni Pagoda, Me Nu Oak Kyaung, Innwa Bridge have suffered severe damage or been reduced to ruins. Hundreds of stupas and temples collapsed. The survival of the common cultural heritages of mankind is facing a severe test.
To this end, the Asian Academy for Heritage Management has released a series of "Post-earthquake Express News on Myanmar's Historical and Cultural Heritages", calling on the global community to pay attention to the precious value of Myanmar's historical and cultural heritages and the damages condition after the earthquake, and jointly protect the treasures of human civilization.

“
01 Heritage Overview
Nanmyint Watch Tower, Located in the Imperial City area of Inwa. The tower is a surviving architectural relic from the Konbaung period, constructed in 1821, and is the only remaining structure from the Bagyidaw royal palace complex.
The tower is built in the Mahabodhi style, with a square-shaped base measuring approximately 32 by 31 feet (about 9.8 × 9.4 meters) and a total height of around 80 feet (approximately 24.4 meters). The structure consists of yellow brick masonry with a wooden pavilion at the top. Following a major earthquake in 1838, only the central core of the tower remained intact. Before the most recent earthquake, the tower was already visibly leaning northwest, with the wooden pavilion at the top also noticeably tilted. For safety reasons, public access to the interior had long been prohibited, and the tower could only be viewed from the outside.
Nanmyint Watch Tower once served as the highest vantage point in the royal city of Inwa, offering a panoramic view of the surrounding area. As a representative example of early 19th-century Burmese architecture, it holds significant historical and architectural value.
“
02 Damages Condition
According to reports from residents in the earthquake-affected area of Myanmar, the recent strong earthquake has caused severe structural damage to the Nanmyint Watch Tower. The tower's tilt has increased significantly, the top structure has completely collapsed, and only the central core of the upper section remains standing, with all surrounding structural elements having fallen. The base has also sustained serious damage, and large portions of the internal red brick masonry are now exposed. Overall, the tower has suffered extensive and critical damage.
