Post-earthquake Express News of
 Yadana Hsemee Pagoda Complex

Foreword
The 7.9-magnitude earthquake that struck on March 28, 2025 caused heavy losses to Myanmar. According to latest reports from CCTV NEWS and the Xinhua News Agency, as of April 10th, the strong earthquake that struck Myanmar on the 28th has resulted in 3649 deaths, with another 5018 injured and approximately 221 missing. We extend our deepest condolences to all the victims.
The earthquake also dealt a devastating blow to numerous cultural heritage sites along Mandalay-Sagaing-Naypyitaw region, with about 150 temples and pagodas damaged. Important structures such as the King Palace, Mahamuni Pagoda, Me Nu Oak Kyaung, Innwa Bridge have suffered severe damage or been reduced to ruins. Hundreds of stupas and temples collapsed. Post-earthquake Express News of Yadana Hsemee Pagoda Complex

01 Heritage Overview
Located in the northern part of the outer city of the ancient capital Inwa, Myanmar, the Lawka Tharaphu Pagoda (ရတနာဆီမီးဘုရား) stands at GPS coordinates 21°50′12.2″N, 95°58′19.3″E. The Yadana Hsemee Pagoda Complex consists of six stupas, one brick monastery, and three Gandhakuti halls.
The complex was constructed by King Inwa to house relics brought from Sri Lanka. The pagoda suffered damage in two major earthquakes in 1485 and 1839, and was subsequently abandoned after the 1839 earthquake. A unique feature of the Yadana Hsemee Pagoda Complex is that it consists of brick built monasteries which started to replace wooden monasteries in Myanmar in the early 19th Century.
The specific original donor of the Pagodas was not mentioned.

02 Architectural Features
The Yadana Hsemee Pagoda Complex consists of six stupas, one brick monastery, and three Gandhakuti halls. The complex contains ten architecturally important structures, numbered from 372 to 381 of Inwa pagoda Inventory, showcasing early Konbaung-style brickwork and Buddha images, Amarapura-Style Brick Monastery. Surrounded by toddy palms, the site is a popular tourist attraction.

03 Damages Condition
Photos taken by local residents after the earthquake reveal that the Yadana Hsemee Pagoda Complex suffered varying degrees of damage during the recent Myanmar earthquake.
The iconic brick-built columns have completely collapsed, with only one side wall remaining standing and the statue at the far end left isolated amidst the debris. Another statue sustained significant damage, its facial features entirely missing and its halo partially detached. The earthquake has caused severe loss to both the architectural integrity and artistic value of the pagoda complex.
