“
01 Heritage Overview
The Thitsar Taik Pagoda (Burmese: သစ္စာတိုက်ဘုရား) was originally constructed during the Inwa Dynasty of Myanmar, situated in the southwestern corner of the ancient city of Inwa, along the road extending from the royal palace terrace toward the former capital’s city walls. Its GPS coordinates are 21°51'13.3"N latitude and 95°58'39.8"E longitude. The identity of the pagoda’s original patron has been lost to history, though it was later renovated and reconstructed under the commission of King Sin Phyu Shin (reigned 1763–1776). According to local legend, successive monarchs of the Inwa Dynasty conducted oath-of-allegiance ceremonies at this pagoda, which led to its colloquial name "Thit Sar Teik" (meaning "Pagoda of Loyalty" in Burmese). The site remains a testament to the sacred rituals that once bound rulers and subjects during dynastic transitions.
“
02 Architectural features
The Thitsar Taik Pagoda measures approximately 110 feet by 110 feet in size and stands 56 feet tall. Its main structure centers around a vaulted central hall, with an entrance on each of its four sides. Above each entrance rises a three-tiered stepped pediment, each tier symbolizing Mount Meru, the sacred cosmological mountain in Buddhist belief. The walls of the central hall and the four entrance chambers are adorned with niches enshrining Buddha statues. The entire edifice rests on a 6-foot-high platform base, encircled by 20 lion statues. The current perimeter walls are reconstructions following earlier collapses.
“
03 Damages Condition
According to NPNews, the Thitsar Taik Pagoda was severely damaged in the earthquake, with partial collapses occurring. Two of the three spires at the top of the temple collapsed during the quake, a significant number of bricks fell off, and the walls developed noticeable cracks.
