From December 4 to 5, 2018, officials and experts from 13 countries including China, Afghanistan, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nepal, Pakistan, Russia, Turkey, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, IICC-X, IICAS attended the 5th Meeting of the Coordinating Committee
on the Serial World Heritage Nomination of the Silk Roads in Ashgabat of Turkmenistan. The conference was hosted by the UNESCO World Heritage Centre and the
UNESCO Office in Tehran, organized by the Foreign Ministry of Turkmenistan and the National Commission for UNESCO of Turkmenistan, and received strong support
from IICC-X, IICAS and the Japan Trust Fund. The meeting discussed the preservation of the heritage of the “Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan
Corridor” , which was inscrbed on the World Heritage List in 2014. The representatives from China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan respectively reported on the conservation and management of
the properties in each country. IICC-X introduced its work as t he s ecretariat o f the World Heritage Coordination Committee for the Transnational Series of Silk Road
and the Secretariat of the Working Group of China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan and the Information Center since the Fourth Coordination Meeting, and the work plan
for the future. The meeting also discussed the nomination strategy and working mechanism of the nomination being carried out in Central Asian countries, and the
strategy of the Silk Road South Asian Corridors and the Maritime Silk Road. Representatives of China and Nepal reported on the work related to the nomination
of the South Asian Corridor of the Silk Road. The participants agreed that cooperation among China, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in the field of World Heritage
Management and Monitoring of the “Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang'an-T ianshan Corridor” should be further strengthened. They should promote the inter -
national cooperation of experts from Central Asia, South Asia and China through online communication with IICC-X.
The meeting elected co-chairs of the new coordination committee, the Vice Chairman of ICOMOS CHINA, professor of Tsinghua University, Lv Zhou, and the
Chairman of the C ultural Heritage Research Center of the Institute of History of the Kyrgyz National Academy of Sciences, Ms. AmanBeva Bakyt. The conferenc e als o wel -
comed Iran and U NESCO to co-organize the sixth coordination meeting.
This meeting, as a special event during the designation of 2018 as the year of ‘Turkmenistan is the Heart of the Great Silk Road’, is partially financed by the UNESCO/Japanese Funds-in-Trust, via the project “Support for the Silk Roads World Heritage Sites in Central Asia (Phase II)”.
