THE major part of the present-day Uttar Pradesh was formerly known as Madhya Desa.In ancient India it occupied a very important position, being regarded as the land par excellence.The early development of Buddhism took place in the soil of Madhya Desa.The northeastern portion of Utar Pradesh was, in the past, called K osala Janapada (kingdom). The small trritory of the Sakyas of Kapilavastu was included in Kosala.Gautama, the Buddha, was born at Lumbini near Kapilavastu. After his Enlightenment at Bodhgaya, Buddha spent almost his whole life in Madhya Desa.

从前，今北方邦的主体叫做 “中国”，它是人杰地灵的古印度要地，而佛教就发轫于“中国”的土壤之中。那时候，今北方邦的东北部是憍萨罗国，释迦人的小国迦毗罗卫一度从属于它，而佛陀乔达摩就诞生于这个迦毗罗卫的郊野。菩提迦耶觉醒之后，佛陀几乎终生都待在“中国”。

译注：印度的“中国”是其十六国时期的所谓 “中央（间）之国”，主要包括恒河平原为中心的摩揭陀，㤭萨罗和阿逾陀等大国所在的今北方邦和比哈儿邦的大部分地方。
